Time blindness: why everything slips, even when you watched the clock

There is an explanation almost everyone who slips regularly applies to themselves: “I am lazy”, “I do not care”, “I do not respect other people’s time”. Often none of it is true. The thing that does not work is far narrower and far more concrete: estimating elapsed and required time. And that is a question of measurement, not of will.

What time blindness is

Most people estimate elapsed time in their heads, continuously and without noticing. They do not look at the clock: they feel it. “I am leaving in a minute” works because behind that “minute” sits a fairly accurate internal gauge.

For some people that gauge is far less reliable. The clock is not missing — it is on the wall and on the phone. What is missing is the link between the clock and the now: you read 9:20, you know you have to leave by 9:40, and you still stand up at 9:52. You were not entertaining yourself. You were doing something that felt like “two minutes”.

This has two separate symptoms, and it is worth separating them, because they need different handling:

Why “pay attention to the clock” does not help

Because the advice assumes information is missing. It is not. The problem is not that you do not know what time it is — it is that the knowledge does not convert into action while a task holds you.

The same false assumption sits behind “just allow more time for it”. If the estimate itself is inaccurate, the buffer will be inaccurate too: someone who estimates fifty minutes as ten will be late even with a twenty-minute buffer. The job is not to multiply in your head but to measure once.

The most important distinction

Someone who does not feel elapsed time is not failing to care. Usually the opposite: someone who has been slipping for years is generally ashamed of it and thinks about it far more than someone who is never late. Shame, however, does not improve the estimate — a list does.

The measured list: the only real remedy

The goal is a short, personal table of how long your recurring things actually take. Not in general — for you. A week is enough to build it.

  1. Pick eight to ten recurring things. Getting ready in the morning, the commute, writing an email, the shop, the washing-up, a workout from leaving to getting home. Only things that happen several times a week.
  2. Write down the ESTIMATE before you start. This is the point. It is the estimate that reveals the error, not the real time.
  3. Start a stopwatch, and at the end write down the FACT. A single number, no analysis.
  4. After seven days, work out the ratio. If your estimate is consistently half the real time, then your multiplier is two — and from now on that is something you know rather than feel.
  5. After that, use the TABLE, not your intuition. That switch is the whole improvement: you take the estimate out of the decision.

After a week, what usually emerges is not one multiplier but two: for routine things the estimate is generally decent, while for open-ended things (an email, studying, tidying) it is dramatically off. That itself is useful information — from then on the buffer goes into the calendar next to the open-ended items, not next to the routine ones.

Four things that genuinely help (and are not willpower)

  1. Make time VISIBLE, not readable. A countdown, an hourglass, an analogue clock on the opposite wall work differently from a number you have to call up. What has to be called up is exactly what you will not call up mid-task.
  2. Set the departure, not the arrival. “I have to be there by eight” is an arithmetic task you have to solve again every morning. “Door at 7:25” is not.
  3. Lock the estimate in BEFORE the task, in writing. Afterwards it always turns into an explanation. Beforehand it is data.
  4. Anchor the day to fixed points, not to the clock. If the day hangs on three fixed points, a bad estimate of the time between them does less damage — that is what three daily tasks is about.

And one thing not to do: do not set ten reminders for one day. Anything you have ten of becomes background noise within a week — after which you are where you started, plus one disappointment.

What to say to the person waiting for you

There is a part of chronic lateness almost nobody talks about: the other person. Someone who waits regularly stops seeing the clock after a while and starts seeing a message — “I am not important enough to them”. That is usually untrue, but the explanation we tend to offer reinforces exactly that.

And one thing that counts for a great deal: do not let them find out about the lateness on the spot. A message at departure (“leaving now, twelve minutes”) is worth more than any apology afterwards — because it is not about a feeling but about a number that can be kept.

Transitions: this is where most of the time goes

If you measure a week, one thing will almost certainly show up: it is not the tasks that are longer than you thought — the transitions are. The time between one task and the next is what is simply missing from most calendars.

The solution is not more discipline but getting the transition into the calculation: someone who knows that leaving the house takes fifteen minutes for them does not plan for eight o’clock but for 7:45. It sounds trivial, but it produces the single biggest improvement — because until now a measurable, repeating item was missing from the sum.

Where the limit is

An unreliable sense of time is not in itself an illness — a great many people estimate badly and nothing comes of it. It is worth seeing a professional when the slipping causes actual loss: a job, an exam, a relationship, money.

Is setting reminders enough?
